Paper Sheeting Machine Selection Guide: Precise Matching of Paper Type × GSM × Machine Model

Published on 06.05
1.General Paper Classification and Core Cutting Characteristics (Fundamental Basis for Machine Selection)
General Paper Classification and Core Cutting Characteristics
The core premise of cutting machine selection is to clearly understand the physical properties of paper (stiffness, toughness, coating, fiber structure) and slitting pain points, rather than relying only on GSM. Based on actual industry application scenarios, general paper types are divided into five categories, and their slitting-related core characteristics are defined to provide a basis for machine matching.
1.1 .Light & Flexible Uncoated Paper (50–120gsm)
Core Characteristics: Loose fiber structure, extremely low stiffness, light weight, high air permeability, no surface coating. During slitting, it is prone to stretching, wrinkling, and static electricity. Multi-roll unwinding may cause synchronization issues, paper drifting, and rough edges.
Typical Paper Types: Woodfree paper, writing paper, tissue paper, corrugated medium paper, ordinary copy paper, lightweight printing base paper.

1.2. Medium GSM Printing / Ordinary Packaging Paper (120g~250g)

Core Characteristics: Medium stiffness, certain toughness, some paper types have surface coating. During slitting, coating scratches and powder loss may occur. Large roll diameters are prone to deviation, and tension balance in multi-roll unwinding is difficult.
Typical Paper Types: Coated paper, matte paper, ordinary kraft paper, linerboard, lightly coated woodfree paper, tag paper base paper.
1.3. High GSM Rigid Packaging Paperboard (250g~550g)
Core Characteristics: High-density fibers, strong rigidity, thick structure, very high stiffness, almost no elongation. Slitting has high cutting resistance. Standard single-knife machines are prone to edge cracking and compression marks. Multi-roll unwinding may cause excessive machine load.
Typical Paper Types: White cardboard, grey back duplex board, single-side coated kraft board, imitation kraft board, laminated kraft paper, food packaging board.
1.4.Extra Thick Industrial Paperboard / Special Composite Paper(550g~1000g)
Core Characteristics: Multi-layer composite structure, extremely thick, no toughness, brittle, very high self-weight. Slitting has extremely high cutting load, vibration, and cutting deviation. Standard knife shafts are prone to deformation and can only operate at low speed with single roll.
Typical Paper Types: Grey board, double grey board, industrial paperboard, composite aluminum foil paper, high-end metallic paperboard, extra-thick rigid box board.
1.5. Special Application Paper (120g–400g, selection based on stiffness equivalent to similar GSM paper types)
Core Characteristics: Surface has plastic film (lamination), moisture-proof coating, or surface coating. Slippery, and prone to sticking under high temperature. Some paper types have loose winding and are difficult to correct.
Typical Paper Types: Laminated kraft paper, moisture-proof composite paper, tube paper, coated packaging paper, laser paper.
2.Core Performance Analysis of CHM Roll Paper Cutting Machine Models
CHM paper roll to sheet cutting machines are mainly divided into the single-knife paper sheeter series and the double-knife paper sheeter reinforced series. Differences in machine structure and mechanical performance determine their applicable paper grade levels. The core machine models and performance are as follows, providing mechanical principle support for machine selection.
Single-Knife Paper Roll to sheet cutting machine (CHM-1400/1700/1900 paper sheeter)
  • Working Principle: Single-knife reciprocating straight cutting, fixed knife seat, single cutting action, low mechanical impact and smooth web transport, suitable for low-resistance and flexible paper feeding requirements.
  • Core Performance: GSM range 60g–550g (standard model), maximum speed 300 cuts/min and 300 m/min, cutting accuracy ±0.5mm, maximum web width 1400/1700/1900mm, maximum roll diameter 1800mm, unwinding supports 1–5 rolls (decreases as GSM increases).
  • Structural Limitations: Limited knife rigidity and low cutting torque, unable to withstand high cutting resistance of heavy paperboard; low pressure from pressing rollers, leading to edge cracking or incomplete cutting when processing thick paper.
  • Application Nature: Designed specifically for low-GSM, low-stiffness, and flexible web-running paper. When used for thick paper, various slitting defects are likely to occur.
Double-Rotary Knife Paper Sheeter (CHM-SGT 1400/1700/1900 synchro sheeter)
  • Working Principle: Upper and lower dual spiral rotary knives cut against each other, with no mechanical impact and uniform shear force. The knife shaft is thickened, side walls are reinforced, and the frame is overall tempered and strengthened, enabling it to withstand high-resistance cutting requirements.
  • Core Performance: GSM range 200g–1000g (heavy-duty reinforced model). The cutting head adopts double rotary knives, with upper and lower knives forming a paired spiral cutting structure. The cutting edge is smooth, without burrs or compression marks. The rigid frame can absorb cutting vibration and is suitable for heavy paper rolls.
  • Structural Advantages: High cutting torque, strong vibration resistance, and high rigidity. It effectively solves problems such as edge cracking, compression marks, and cutting deviation in thick paper slitting, and is suitable for high-stiffness and high-thickness paper materials.
  • Application Nature: Specifically designed for high-GSM, high-stiffness, and rigid paperboard. When used for thin paper, it may cause wrinkling and slitting loss.
2.3. Core Optional Configurations and Application Scenarios

2.4.Core Principle of Limitation on Unwinding Roll Quantity
The number of unwinding rolls is not set arbitrarily. It is primarily restricted by four mechanical factors, which directly determine the rationality of machine selection:
  • Self-weight Load: The higher the GSM, the heavier each paper roll. Multi-roll stacking may exceed the load-bearing limit of the frame bearings and unwinding stand.
  • Centrifugal Force Effect: During high-speed operation, multiple heavy rolls generate significant centrifugal force, which may cause vibration and web deviation, affecting cutting accuracy.
  • Tension Synchronization: The higher the stiffness of the paper, the more difficult it is to maintain consistent tension in multi-roll unwinding, leading to uneven tightness and cutting deviation.
  • Web Guiding Load: The more rolls used, the greater the compensation demand on the web guiding system. However, thick paper has high rigidity and cannot be finely adjusted, so single-roll operation is required.
Summary: Lower GSM and softer paper allow more unwinding rolls; higher GSM and stiffer paper allow fewer rolls. High-GSM paper must be operated in single-roll mode.
